PostSubject: Tale of Four Armies   Thu Oct 09, 2008 1:12 am

Okay, so I've received a great deal of interest from kids at school in Warhammer; enough that I'm going to be starting a club at the high school.

So here's the deal. I want to have about 4 different armies for the kids to fool around with, ideally with about 1000 points apiece. So far, I have Space Marines completely covered. Beyond that, I'm looking to do these armies, either because I already have a bunch of them, or they're interesting to me:

Orks (I have Black Reach stuff..and that's it)
Eldar (Battalion Box= 10 Guardians, 1 Wave Serpent, 5 Dire Avengers, 1 War Walker)
Tyranids(Only have the 6 Genestealers and 8 Gaunts from Maccrage)

So my question is, where do I go from here. I'd like for the armies to be as balanced as possible to lower bitching possibility, but understand if they can't be. If anyone can recommend what I should get for these respective armies, please let me know. Thanks again, all!

I just cooked this up. If you have one Black Reach set, grab the Orkz and Deffkoptas from a second one, convert a Nob into a Dok, and throw together some gubbinz for a Trukk and a Looted Tank of some sort, and here you go.

Warboss, Power Klaw, Cybork Body, Eavy Armor = 100
5 Nobz, 4 Big Choppa, Waagh Banner, 5x Eavy Armor, Painboy Upgrade =190
- Trukk, Red Paint = 40

20 Slugga Boyz + 2 Big Shootas + Nob, Klaw, Bosspole = 170
20 more Slugga Boyz as above = 170

5 Deffkoptas w/TL Rokkits = 225

Looted Wagon w/Boomgun = 105

hmm as far as the eldar go.. its a tricky situation.

grab another war walker at least

maybe then go with a farseer.. possibly then striking scorpions or warp spiders.

The easiest way to have really balanced armies is to stick with only basic troops all the time.

It will get boring though.

Eldar and Marines are easy to balance because they have equivalent units of some type in each army. War walker = dreadnought. Tactical Squad = Dire Avengers. Orks and 'Nids will be a balance issue against marines and Eldar at 1000 points. You should go easy on the boyz and gaunts to stay on the safe side.

If you want to play around with this stuff let me know. We can test run them all some afternoon.

Straight up agree with Leon on the boyz and gribblies. Mendin's ork list is a pretty good one. Such that it'll probably wipe the floor with the other lists. The five koptas are going to wreak vehicle havoc.

I'd recommend using the black reach orks plus some of the other less utilized features. Maybe get another mob of boyz and then kans or a dread or something like that.

As far as the nids, you'll need an HQ unit, so you could go with some warriors, more guants and one fex?

Nids you can go with Warriors, you defo need a fex in there. I wouldn't do a hive Tyrant....but you could also choose a brood lord. He can have Stealers with him. Stay away from Zanthrops and stuff like that. Too complicated for the young padawans.

Witt.....see if you can get them to join the boards too!

Thanks a ton, fellas! I have a really good idea of what I'm going to do now.

Mendin: I think I'm going to go with that exact list. I'm going to be greenstuffing a Nob into a Dok, so I'll post it as I do it.

Leon: Good call on the balance. My boys are just happy they have a teacher at school that actually wants to help them out--most of the kids interested are EXTREMELY high risk (i.e. really shitty home lives).

CJ & JMarv: It looks like the Nid Battleforce is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. I can't quite figure out how it's only $90 bucks though... I priced everything individually and I daresay it's the best deal in all of 40k other than Black Reach ($150 in figs for $90).

Surprisingly, the Eldar are becoming my hardest to put together. I've got a buddy on Boardgamegeek.com that's going to trade me 20 guardians, a wave serpent, 10 warp spiders, 4 warlocks, 2 farseers, a Wraithlord, and a few characters for some boardgames I no longer play. Think that'll be enough for a playable army?

Again, thanks a ton guys. Love this group.

hmm

well 20 guardians is a good start.. with the farseer too.. but i would keep the warlocks out of it as they complicate things.

if you can.. dire avengers are a great troop selection and very fluffy.

wraithlord is GREAT to have, especially since its such a sexy model.

throw on the warp spiders, put the avengers in the serpent, grab a couple war walkers and you are SET to GO!

Witt if you ever need help with those kids let me know. I used to help out with high risk, and special needs all the time in school. Before the jokes start I was in the group as an aid and yes I had my problems but I got those figured out due to some great teachers and some really supportive family members. If you need any help let me know Witt.

All that Eldar stuff you listed should be plenty for a 1000 point list.

I start getting worried about balance again when I hear words like wraithlord and carnifex though.

It's not that those guys are too cheesy, it's just that now you have to make sure the orc and marine armies have something that can potentially take them out. It complicates things a little.

worry not about the orks, as long as the mobs have a nob with a power klaw, they can take down the carnifex and a wraithlord... I'll donate some ork stuff for the cause!!!
