Kain I am right there with you. I want to play my Tau using their fluff, but I also want to win every once in a while.

The reason I play the Tau is because of their fluff. I love the goal they are trying to achieve and I think its great. I just hate that they give them certain fluff and then turn around and making them play differently then their fluff.

pah! Wining is for suckas! geek

just kidding, I totally understand. Winning a game every once in a while does help to let you know you actually can play the game...

that being said...winning with an army that struggles is 1000x better then winning with an army that just plays itself or requires very little work to get done.

to steer this back on topic...in my book, if you spend the money for the models, you should be able to use them. You bought the cool ass FK Tau dude...use him. If he kicks my ass all over the place...so what! It's just a game, and it is suppose to be fun.

I think the problem with the Tau is their inability to hold objectives. It's not like they have a great deal of staying power.

Sure they can kick ass, but when it comes time to hold that hill...bad news bears!

Most of the Players are willing to lose men to effectively win the game. In Tau society that goes against everything they believe in. The firewarrior are supposed to be good at shooting and have powerful guns but they barely shoot better then orks. Their whole society is about fighting long distance battles and not hand to hand but they don't have the shooting ability to support this theory. I understand they have marker lights to help with this but if that unit gets wiped out its all over for the Tau shooting. Yes I know it sounds like whining but its true when compared to all the other shooting/assault armies out there.

A firewarrior has greater shooting ability than a marine in most situations.

A marine using a bolter will hit 2/3 and wound 1/2 the time so 1/3 of attempts will wound.

A firewarrior will hit 1/2 the time and wound 2/3 of the time resulting in 1/3 wounds per attempt.

This is all at a 30 inch range and at less pts per model.

In comparing fluff, spacemarines are definitely portrayed a superior to a firewarrior in skill and ability. Tau make up for being less awesome physically by having better equipment.

Wouldn't a firewarrior be willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good? In gameplay, they have to win in the movement and shooting phase and suck in assault which seems to be like the fluff to me.

The individual Tau might but the Tau commanders would not send his men out to get slaughtered its just not the Tau way. The Tau do not believe in killing ones self for the greater good. Reason behind it being that each life in the Empire adds to the greater good. If they were to think like you were then they would have suicide bombing squads. Ultimately life is precious and the Tau understand that even the loss of one man could cause a problem.

I think comparing fluff to rules/gameplay is pretty pointless.

It's rare for an army to perform true to fluff.

Look at marines Wink

Unfortunately the loss of one person in the Tau army really can screw things up.

And this is why Tau have, erm, persuaded other more physically able races to assist them for the Greater Good.
